Why this petition matters

Have you ever been to the zoo? Where you can see animals like elephants, gorillas, penguins, and many more, in their habitats, ‘happy’ and ‘free’. Well, that’s not even close to how it actually is.

Today, elephants are captured and/or kept in captivity primarily for our entertainment, and zoos are just one of the lots of examples of how we mistreat animals. According to Elephant Voices, “Around the world there exist between 15,000-20,000 captive elephants and the circumstances for most of them are horrible.” For example, according to TMJ4, our own Milwaukee county zoo is listed as one of the ‘ Top ten worst zoos for animals.’ The indoor habitat for the elephants is a room made out of cement, with glass windows. That’s all. No trees, sun, or green plants. Sure, there’s some dry and old hay and waste, but they should be in wide, open areas with the sun and grass and dirt, not an old cement pen. And the animals are not happy at all. They show ‘tics’ or signs that they do not like captivity. The animals cover their ears, rock back and forth, or pace. Today, there are approximately 750 gorillas in captivity around the world and an estimated 100,000 lowland gorillas (and far fewer mountain gorillas.)  Nearly 3,000 chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans are illegally killed or stolen from the wild each year, according to a new report from the United Nations Environmental Programme's Great Apes Survival Partnership.

We cannot let this injustice stand. Sign this pettition. Save a life.
