Stop 84th Street from Becoming a Crosstown Bike Route
This petition had 681 supporters
The Department of Transportation wants to make 84th Street a crosstown bike route. This proposal is a huge threat to neighborhood safety given the already massive overcrowding of 84th Street. It will jeopardize pedestrian safety - especially of young children, of who there are many on East 84th Street. In light of how crowded the street already is, the proposal also would endanger cyclists who are supposed beneficiaries of the proposal.
Almost any other location would be safer for residents and cyclists. 84th Street is a highly-trafficked, converted and narrow street with counter, well-documented safety issues. This proposal will impact detrimentally the quality of life of all 84th Street residents. There are numerous other viable streets on the Upper East Side that do not have the pre-existing convention of 84th Street.
Residents of 84th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues have already seen the street dramatically commercialized through the Citi Bike installation.
This proposal must be stopped.
