Due to the increased caution taken during the COVID 19 pandemic, students at Stony Brook university were informed this fall that dorm cooking privileges would be significantly restricted. The already limited kitchen facilities, which usually contain an electric stove and functioning oven, have been stripped down to a set of two microwaves. Although these, as well as rentable dorm room microwaves, are available, many are faulty, have broken components or are completely inoperable. The university organizes their dorm availabilities partially based on available kitchens, which makes the unfairly reduced cooking facilities even more disappointing. On another note, the on campus eating options available to students outside of these kitchen facilities have an appalling lack of quality; Several students have become sick or have felt unwell due to the insufficient quality and options, myself included. The only other option for students is to purchase microwavable meals or order food from off campus. Despite the apparent cause of these restrictions being COVID 19, the kitchen area has already been adapted to encourage safe practices, and the removal of sufficient cooking appliances only hurts students health and well being.
