Allow Backtracking on Assignments, Quizzes, Midterms and Finals. (Health Science Major)
Students in the Health Science Major at Stony Brook University are required to take examinations using laptops installed with a lockdown browser. This lockdown browser was understandably implemented for students during the Coronavirus Pandemic where online education was the safest option.
Now that professors and students are back taking in person classes, the lockdown browser is still required during tests. Using the lockdown browser (Respondus) restricts the student from opening other tabs and programs during the test. This is fair and most of the student population accepts this. Examinations such as Quizzes, Midterms and Finals unfortunately, through this program DO NOT Allow Backtracking. In other words, once a student answers a question and continues to the next question, they can no longer access the previous question. Several graduate programs that offer a license upon completion implement this feature in the board examinations however, this is not a graduate program.
The restriction of backtracking is completely unnecessary during test taking. During orientation for this major, the professors and administrators claimed that this is the way the major was conducted for 19 years and it intends to stay this way. Incase anyone has forgotten, exams were administered through paper with the use of scantrons, which therefore Allowed Backtracking. The lockdown browser has the ability to Enable or Disable backtracking. If the major is to be conducted fairly and justifiably, as well as in accordance to the curriculum 19 years ago, Backtracking should be allowed on Exams, Quizzes, Midterms and Finals. Healthcare professionals are taught to be understanding and to listen to the concerns of others, making this small change will create a large impact for students. Demonstrating that leaders in the Healthcare profession do listen and are understanding to others concerns.
