We call on City of Stonnington and its citizens and others to look after the health and wellbeing of its citizens by keeping Prahran Aquatic Centre open during the week.
Between 1st July and 30th September, the facility operates on “Winter hours” closing between 9.30am and 4.30pm. This directly contravenes the council’s own health and wellbeing manifesto.
Swimming is a fitness activity that can be done by anyone, but not everyone is available between 6am and 9.30am, and 4.30pm to 7.30pm. Parents of babies, toddlers and primary school children are a major group who appear to be discriminated against by this scheduling debacle.
The world has changed greatly since the introduction of these limited “winter hours” in 2007, and so have we.
There is a much greater understanding and acknowledgment of the psychological and physical benefits of exercise. Swimming is the perfect low intensity exercise that is achievable in virtually any physical state, from pregnancy, obesity, arthritis - the list is virtually endless. That’s why it’s so important that this brilliant resource be available during the day. Imagine if local cafes closed during their so-called quiet times? Or libraries? Or indeed council offices? Why stop people from doing themselves good? Why must this precious resource fall victim to economic-based decisions?
I began swimming laps in the 50 metre outdoor pool more than 30 years ago, and cannot imagine my life without swimming there at least once a week. It has played a huge role in my life from my days as a single young woman, through marriage to a man who shares my passion for swimming, two pregnancies, and the joy of watching my own children splash and swim there. We are passionate about Prahran pool and would love to be able to exercise there during the day, rather than spend more than an hour in the car travelling to Harold Holt pool.
