Sex trafficking is particularly hard to define because it is difficult to have a concrete number or definition. However, according to the Hotline Statistics, sex trafficking is defined as being forced to have sex for money or something against the value of his or her will, under 18 and is engaging in commercial sex, being forced to work or perform services against his or her will (Hotline Statistics). Additionally, according to the Human Trafficking Hotline, in the United States, out of the 5,147 case studies that were taken into account, sex trafficking was the most common of slavery at 3,718 (Hotline Statistics). But the media actually seems to be the greatest marketing tool in the United States for the pimps who want to be a part of trafficking (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States).

People often think that sex trafficking is far away from where they are, but that is often not the case. It is usually closer to home, often times between Americans by Americans (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States). Sex trafficking in the media is somewhat portrayed as "joys" especially when it comes to prostitution instead of focusing on the concerns of it and the true effects that it has on others. (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States). ECPAT USA reports that the average age for the entry of street prostitution is between 12 and 14 years old (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States).

Within the US especially it is becoming an issue that is not really stigmatized, for example, men and women use the phrase "pimp" as slang now, yet they do not understand what it actually is. (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States). People are required to bring the pimp around 500-200 dollars per night (Enslaved in America: Sex Trafficking in the United States).

This has become an epidemic within the United States that people are destigmatizing which makes it particularly hard to deal with it because of the lack of the concern that there is.
