Natasha goulden started this petition to Stockport MBC

Stockport MBC charge among the highest recovery fees for lost dogs in England. The fee is £147.50. In Devon it is £25 and boroughs of London £50. In nearby Derbyshire it is £50 and in Cheshire East it is £74.50. If you cannot afford to pay you have 7 days to find the money, by which time the fee increases by £10 every day to £217.50. If you are unable to pay this the dog will either be rehomed or put down. Financially, this does not make sense. The cost to withhold the dog and find new owners will far outweigh the £147.50 fee. Similarly, the fee of £147.50 is not reasonable nor proportionate. It is common for dogs to go missing and a relief for them to be found. To then find that you cannot have them returned because of this extortionate fee is even more upsetting.

There is no consideration for the dogs welfare or the emotional impact on the dog or owner alike. A dog being withheld from its family is bordering on cruel, let alone putting it down when it's family want it back.

Stockport MBC needs to lower its fees in line with national average at least. The fee should be proportionate to the costs incurred. Neighbouring councils using the same facilities do so for half the cost.

I started this petition because…
When my 5 year old left our back gate open, our husky, Baxter, escaped. He was found nearby but the warden was called. The warden knew within hours that we were the owners, however, they have refused to return him without payment, which we cannot afford. They will wait the 7 days, at which stage, they will either rehome him or put him down. How this is fair or justified is beyond us. Whilst I accept that there will be costs involved in recovering him this feels like blackmail and incredibly unjustified and unfair. Please help us to get our family pet, who we have had since 8 weeks old and is now 10 years old, back home and prevent other families from potentially having their pets put down because of Stockport MBCs insistence on racketeering.
