FRPS (The Friends of Romiley Primary School) started this petition to Eraina Smith (Team Leader Network Management, Stockport Council)

Stockport Council has now released temporary plans for MUCH NEEDED speed restrictions through Romiley Village.

You can view the plans here

It is part of the council’s response to Covid, to help people in Romiley to walk and cycle more while maintaining social distancing. The council received money from the central government’s Emergency Travel Fund to pay for the interventions.

The council says: “We expect the temporary scheme to be in place until spring 2021. If local traders and residents like the arrangements then there's the option to make them permanent. A public consultation would take place before any decisions are made.”

However, these restrictions do not apply to Sandy Lane, effectively creating a bypass of the lower speeds and narrow roads.  Traffic will be able turn right up Sandy Lane, over Greave and down through Woodley to reach links to the motorway, something which will make this road extremely dangerous, especially for our children at school drop off and pick up times.

This will have a significant knock on effect for any families bringing their children to or collecting them from both Romiley Primary School and Greave Primary School.  It will also make the crossing point at the bottom of Sandy Lane and entrance to Romiley Park extremely dangerous and even more difficult to navigate.

We completely support the need for new traffic calming measures in order to make travel for pedestrians through Romiley Village much safer, what we ask is that those measures are extended to Sandy Lane to prevent it from becoming even more of a "rat run" for traffic than it already is.

We ask that Stockport Council implement the same 20mph speed restrictions, temporary speed cushions and road narrowings on Sandy Lane as they have on Compstall Road and Stockport Road whilst these temporary measures are in place.
