We have had a relatively safe and functioning school year for the past four and a half months. However, following our return from winter break, there has been a drastic shift. With the introduction of the Omicron variant, more and more students are disappearing from classrooms. As of last week, there were an estimated 120 cases among students. That is approximately equivalent to four classrooms worth of students, gone. Over the weekend, those numbers are sure to grow.

The district claims that us students need to be in-person for school. I myself agree that it is important to be in school and interact with my peers. However, enough is enough. We students should not have to compromise our safety or those of our relatives. The hospital’s intensive care unit is flooded. Our dedicated nursing staff is running on fumes and working while sick. Are we to be held responsible? Furthermore, finals are fast approaching, and what is to come of the students who are absent with Covid? How are we supposed to have a safe winter formal? How many more events are we to miss because we cannot take the time to ensure student safety?

If the school directors really cared about us, they would provide an environment where students feel safe. It is our right to have an education. It is our right to go to school without fear. All we need is a few weeks. By then, the variant will have run its course and we can return to in-person learning safely. Students, if you have had enough, do something about it. On our own, we may be “just some kids,” but if we stand together, we will make change.
