Stock up on freely made chocolate
We wouldn't beat a child for a chocolate bar; why would we pay someone else to do so?
Children on the Ivory Coast spend their days under the broiling sun, doing hard and dangerous work with machetes. They receive no pay, and no education or medical care. At night they are locked up in rooms and severely beaten if they try to escape, all to harvest 70% of the cacao beans used to make the chocolate bars we eat. We wouldn't beat a child for a chocolate bar; why would we pay someone else to do so?
Make the decision to buy differently. Stock up on freely made chocolate (found at Trader Joe's, Publix, and Whole Foods) and keep it in the freezer to eat the next time you have a chocolate craving. Give some for gifts, explaining the Fair Trade symbol and why it is important to you. And next time you see a manager at one of these stores, give them a shout-out and say THANKS for choosing freely made chocolate.
