Why this petition matters

Started by Courtney Olin

The St. Michael-Albertville High School has recently announced that the STMA 2021 prom will not allow prom dates that attend a school other then STMA or dates who are not a STMA junior/senior. We feel that because prom is split into two separate groups and that it will be hosted at the Target Field Stadium in Minneapolis, that there should be no issue with bringing dates from other schools or grades. Because STMA students have had to miss out on most of the 2020-2021 school year and all school events, we feel that prom is a great opportunity to redeem this unfortunate school year. As long as students wear masks, socially distance from those who are not in their group, are respectful to those around them, and do not attend the prom if they are showing signs of Covid-19, we see no issue with allowing others to enjoy the STMA prom. As an STMA senior, I personally would like to be able to at least enjoy one prom with my date, as the 2020 prom was cancelled, ruining our previous chances. As many students have expressed that they will not attend the prom unless they can bring their date, we find it only fair that we are given the opportunity to bring our own dates. As a way to prevent the spread of Covid-19, we feel that, requiring temperature checks upon entry of the prom, setting up sanitization stations, wearing masks, and socially distancing from others is the best way to execute the STMA 2021 prom. We are hopeful that this petition is taken into careful consideration to make a change with the current 2021 STMA prom guidelines to allow guests to attend.
