Student teaching is done for 1 year which is 2 semester of little to no income. The first semester you have to complete 175hrs in your assigned classroom which is ok but the issue is the second portion of student teaching where you have to be in the classroom 5 days a week with no income. You still have to get there everyday, provide for your family and pay your bills for 4 months without little to no income. Student teaching should be paid internship or at least provide a stipend to help with travel expenses and lunch. 
Imagine a third world country ( Jamaica) can provide a stipend for their student teachers but a first world country cannot? Colorado is doing the right thing because they realize the importance of student teachers and know that we have expenses while we are in this position for 15-16 weeks. 
Department of Education cannot truly expect student teachers to go unpaid for 15-16 weeks! Remember we have families to take care of! You ask us to be fully committed for 15-16 weeks in a classroom, we are asking you to help us by providing a stipend.
