Why this petition matters

Too many people are being killed or injured by impaired drivers. These drunk drivers are basically getting a slap on the wrist and getting away with injuring and killing people. I propose that drivers who are impaired and cause these injuries or fatalities get charged and jailed on the spot. Should one be pulled over and charged with impaired driving, they should lose their license for an automatic 6 months for the first offense and permanently for the second offense. The courts do not need to be tied up with these matters. For bodily harm you should get an automatic 5 years in jail per charge, for death you should get an automatic 25 years in jail per death on the spot. Impaired driving laws are not new. Everyone knows it's illegal to drive while impaired but it is still happening. The minute you get behind the wheel impaired you should lose your right to a trial. Years ago my dad was injured by a drunk driver. The drunk driver (a lawyer) ran a stop sign and totalled my dad's truck and injured my dad causing permanent damage. On June 8 2021 our beautiful 28 year old daughter was killed by a drunk driver. She left behind 2 children who had lost their father in 2016. Both of these impaired drivers pled not guilty. My Dad lost his ability to be able to smell,  and his ability to work because he had to recover from his injury. Our grandchildren lost their rights to have their mother in their lives to raise them, to love them, to provide for them. Our daughter lost her ability to be here for her children,  to be able to graduate from the college that she was attending in hopes to attain a better life for her children and herself( she was at the top of her class), our family lost our right to have our daughter in our lives, we lost our ability to love her, to see her graduate, to maybe see her get married, to enjoy having her here in person.

The impaired driver who killed our daughter has shown absolutely no remorse. After the incident transpired he was seen out at Stampede and at parties. He was dating our daughter previous to her death and we had spoken to him about open alcohol in the vehicle. Our words fell on deaf ears. He, like other impaired drivers knew the difference between right and wrong. I had an uncle who was an alcoholic and drove. He never learned, fortunately he never killed or injured anyone, however he did try to beat the penalty put on him by the courts when he was charged which was a breathalyzer he had to use in order to start his vehicle. This happened years ago and some laws have been changed however impaired driving is still happening.

The loss of our daughter and how it happened was in the news and online media. Most recently a couple of weeks ago by Trochu AB two other young people were killed by an impaired driver.

It is apparent that the laws and penalties in place are NOT enough of a deterrent for those that are impaired and clearly know they shouldn't be driving.

This is why I propose the stiffer on the spot jail time. My goal is to prevent anymore senseless loss or injury caused by impaired driving. If we stand up together, we can save more lives. If we don't push for the quicker more stiffer penalties we will lose more loved ones at the hands of these impaired drivers. Please join us in trying to get these changes made.
