Chaka Welch started this petition to STIB

As an individual, as a mom myself, I found that it is extremely hard to get around Brussels with babies and prams. Unfortunately, the safest, sturdiest prams are all large with big wheels. Small babies cannot be transported in smaller prams which are built for children who can at least sit up properly and even then, they are not as safe. Women and parents find themselves in a dilemma having to choose between safety or access to transportation. We shouldn't have to choose!

There are currently a few tram lines running with old trams from the STIB, including but not limited to 39/44 and 81. These old trams have very narrow doors and high stairs which make it impossible to enter with a wide (safe) pram. Let alone with someone in a wheelchair! If there is no change for us moms, at least do this for people in wheelchairs who have no alternatives. Sometimes, even if the station is accessible with a lift, the trams are not or vice versa and we find ourselves being stuck or having to make awful detours that sometimes take up to 2 hours extra just to get to a destination that was originally not that far.

Moreover, these old trams are very dangerous with sometimes unpredictable doors and if we do manage to get in, it takes so much time to do so that the drivers don't always realize someone is still leaving/entering and closes the doors. I have been stuck between shutting doors either on myself with my hands still on the pram or on my son's pram itself at the back of trams and buses.

Other women have tried writing to the STIB but poor excuses where given such as "we would have to adjust the tram rails for new trams" etc. This does not make any sense seen as old and new trams both run on the 39/44 and even 81 tracks.

While the STIB could have changed those trams a long time ago, they preferred investing in brand new shiny buses for the line 36 that aren't even bigger than the previous ones, while moms on wheels and people in wheelchairs are still stuck.

Let's mobilize for a better mobility for those who have little to no access, sometimes with 2 or more small children and/or disabled in a wheelchair!!!!

A caring mom, a caring person.
