Colin Baker started this petition to Stevens Institute of Technology and

Stevens Institute of Technology had planned on allowing students to choose from two options for the Fall 2020 semester:

  • Hybrid In-person/online learning
  • Fully online learning

By allowing students to choose to partially come back to campus for the fall, it seemed somewhat reasonable to not offer a tuition discount for fully online learning, as this would incentivize students to pick the cheaper option. On August 3rd, President Farvardin made the hard (and correct) decision to prohibit any in-person learning for upperclassmen. While Stevens might make the argument that curriculum will remain the same, there is massive added value in taking courses in person versus online. Many students would agree that they could learn the majority of their classes’ work either from a textbook or other online source. The cost of learning would be a few thousand dollars at most. Many universities use in person learning as a justification for the massive premium in tuition over fully accredited online learning options, that typically cost between $7500 & $16,000 a semester in tuition. This is far less than the almost $27,000 Stevens charges a semester.

While there is an intrinsic prestige of a Steven's degree, it would be unfair to say that students receive the exact same value from an online semester versus a fully in-person one. All returning students have already paid a non-reduced tuition for the Spring 2020 semester. It is time to lower tuition to accurately reflect the costs and value of online learning.

This petition calls for:

  • Transparent Online Tuition Pricing
  • A town hall event where Steven's leadership can justify tuition
