Keep Our Children And Neighborhood Safe From Speeding Vehicles

Placing speed humps in our neighborhood will ensure the protection of the children, including my five year old and eleven year old sons, from drivers who are speeding down our streets.  I understand that it is a lengthy process in order to have any kind of traffic calming devices installed, but we do not have the time to wait.  Our children do not have the time to wait.  Action needs to be taken NOW before something tragic happens in our neighborhood.  Our children, pets, pedestrians, and property are at risk and we cannot afford to wait for a slow bureaucratic process in order to make our community safe.

In the wake of the horrific events that took place in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, we as parents are now faced with the fear in letting our children go to school.  We are also scared every time our children interact on social media for fear of child predators.  We have to teach our children to be vigilant and in turn create fear for their lives on a daily basis.  School mass shootings and online predators have now become the norm, but they are beyond our control until laws are changed.  As parents and residents of the city of South Miami, it is also beyond our control to stop reckless drivers from speeding down our neighborhood streets.  These drivers are a threat to our children’s safety and the safety of our community.  The difference is that a change CAN be made NOW to prevent another senseless tragedy from occurring, however this time in our own neighborhood.  We as parents are responsible for teaching our children to be safe, but they should not have to live in fear in their own homes.  They should not be scared to walk to a neighbor’s  house or ride their bikes around the neighborhood.  That is no longer on us as parents rather it is the responsibility of our city government officials to keep our community, especially our children, safe.

I ask that you please join me in the fight to have the City of South Miami government officials take action NOW before something tragic happens.  We already had our family dog hit and killed by a car that was speeding down our street.  What more will it take to have necessary speed bumps be placed on our street?  Will the death of a child make them take action?  Will a lawsuit open their eyes to the severity of the reckless driving that is taking place on our street?  THEY have the power to act NOW!  I do not want, nor should my children have to wake up everyday in fear that they will be struck by a car while playing outside.  We love our community and pay very good money to live in this wonderful neighborhood, but something needs to be done and it needs to be done NOW!
