Our Schools Coalition started this petition to Board Trustee- District 1 Steve Lecholop and

SAISD’s Office of Talent Management has directed all school principals in SAISD to identify the 20% of teachers at their school who they deem “irreplaceable” and to provide their names to the Office of Talent Management so that they can be subject to special retention efforts by the district administration. By requiring principals to identify a small number of “irreplaceable” teachers at their campuses, SAISD is declaring that the majority of our teachers are replaceable. This will further deteriorate teacher morale at our schools and negatively impact our children. It also adds to the principals’ work load by asking them to complete an unnecessary survey in addition to their formal, annual teacher evaluations.

SAISD’s retention initiative is inspired by a 2012 paper entitled “The Irreplaceables” published by TNTP, a corporate-education reform advocacy and teacher training organization. This report has been described as “utterly ridiculous” and criticized for drawing conclusions from small sample sizes. TNTP was created as spin-off of Teach for America in 1997. The founding CEO of TNTP was former Washington D.C. chancellor of schools, Michelle Rhee, who was forced to resign as chancellor after her divisive leadership caused D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty to lose the support of black voters and, consequently, lose re-election. This is an organization that holds traditionally-educated teachers and democratically controlled-public education  in low regard.

While we welcome efforts to improve teacher retention at SAISD schools, our teachers deserve to be evaluated using standards based on rigorous, high-quality research not according to questionable research conducted by an organization with an anti-traditional public school agenda and a poor track-record of improving student outcomes

We demand that the SAISD administration end its use of the “Irreplaceable” survey and employ strategies for evaluating and retaining teachers that are evidenced-based and do not alienate the majority of our teaching staff.
