On August 25th, Governor Murphy has announced that School-Based Youth Services will be eliminated as of October 1st. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the "Colt Connection" at Cumberland Regional High School, where our students receive essential support. We remain hopeful that rallying the advocacy of legislators will help bring light to the devastating news of the elimination of these programs. We respectfully ask that you take a moment and support our community's call to action by signing this petition.

The Cumberland Regional High School SBYSP, Colt Connection, was founded in 2001 and has directly served nearly 5,000 students in the CRHS community to date, making countless critical connections with our youth and their families, and working to meet their specific needs to build bright futures. In addition to individualized counseling, referral services, tutoring, and access to needs fulfillment, Colt Connection’s partnership with CRHS has led to the success of initiatives including the Wawa Summer Youth Employment Program, the Freshman Seminar/Senior Mentor program, field trips, annual events such as the Freshman Orientation program, CRHS Veteran’s Day Program and seasonal activities such as the Tex Robinson Memorial Thanksgiving Food Drive and holiday gift collection for families in need, career fairs, family engagement evenings, community events, and student celebrations surrounding graduation, homecoming, and prom, just to name a few. Over the past 19 years, Colt Connection has reached nearly 100,000 individuals in our community through these events.

Unfortunately, the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF) has decided to stop funding School-Based programs throughout the state as of next month! While we are living in unprecedented times, the decision to eliminate these programs is an extremely irrational decision that will neglect the needs of our students during these difficult times. Our communities will take a loss, as many students are not able to afford mental health care services outside of their school. Mental health care is extremely important and during our current health crisis, should be given top priority to all of our students.

Cumberland Regional High School District cares deeply about our students and will do whatever it takes to help raise awareness but we need your help! Along with signing this petition, please reach out to State Senator Stephen M. Sweeney and NJ Department of Children and Families to express the need for School-Based Youth Services programming.
