Youth EMPOWER, a national youth activist group is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018. The protest is scheduled exactly 30 days after the Stoneman Douglas HS shooting in Parkland, Florida which left 17 people dead and 14 wounded. This protest aims to put pressure on members of Congress to pass meaningful legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.
We want Round Rock ISD to amplify this youth-driven protest by saying #ENOUGH! Since RRISD will be on Spring Break on March 14th, we ask that the district encourage and allow all schools to prominently display '#ENOUGH #NationalSchoolWalkout' on their outdoor school marquis signs on March 14th, 2018.
Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school. Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day. Thoughts and prayers in response to school shootings are not going to save lives. We need action. And we need to come together as a school community and speak out in order for our legislators to hear us and act.
Thank you for helping to amplify the voices of our students and community to keep our schools safe and secure.
