Hello. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people living in Ontario Canada, who are on disability because they are unable to work.

People like my 58 year old mother, who has celiac disease and pays double, sometimes triple for her food. She needed 3 blood transfusions in one night due to the loss of blood from the disease ravaging her body. She is now unable to work and in constant pain, she runs a high risk of many many cancers. And any stress can worsen the diseases toll on her body. She gave up a high paying job after the transfusions. That was when she was in her 30's. She has now raised her children and is on her own again on ODSP (disability). She receives $1266 a month. About $500 is for shelter and the rest is for basic needs.

In Ontario Canada however, a room on it's own, sharing livingroom, kitchen and bathroom, is $700+ a month. Plus pretty much all rooms ask for good credit and first and last month's rent. People on odsp are expected to take $200+ from they're bills and food to pay their rent. Leaving many with nothing to eat, no phone to call doctors and inevitably no where to go again, as rooms are not meant for long term rentals. Most people on odsp are not even considered by most room renters in Ontario.

A basement, bachelor's or one bedroom can be from $1000 up to $1600. This is unacceptable. It is obvious that the disabled people in Ontario are Not receiving adequate income to live a life that they can value. I listen to my mother cry everyday and ask why she's even still here. It breaks my heart. Please not just for my mother but sign for everyone suffering in this situation. The disabled deserve to afford an adequate living space that you would want someone you love living in.

I believe our best answer would be acceptable, proper income for renting, adequate enough for a basement apartment, bachelor's or one bedroom apartment. Something that would give people on odsp a good value of life. Then I think we could benefit from more low income housing to be built while income is raised so people can afford basements or even motel/hotels until more low income housing in built.

Lastly I think the government needs to consider and implement rent control. Something we used to have. Something to control the outlandish rental prices and keep rooms and basements from charging first and last months rent. Actually enforce these rules. Actively check online sites that provide rental advertisement. This all would greatly help improve our disabled/elderly on the streets and homelessness in general. Let's do this together!
