My name is Sophia Thompson and I am a nursing student and the President of the Montana Student Nurses' Association (MSNA) at Montana State University.  As nurses, we are bound by ethics, rules and regulations to care for our patients, their families, ourselves, our families, our colleagues and our community. We believe that we must care for all during a pandemic. One of the simplest ways of doing so is by wearing a mask. Recently, Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian and the Board decided to only encourage wearing masks, not to require them on campus. This will not only endanger us as students, but also our professors, their families, our families, our cohorts, staff and our patients. Putting all of these people at risk is simply not an option. We demand that the State of Montana, the Commissioner of Higher Education, Gallatin Health Department and Montana State University make it mandatory for all students, staff, faculty and visitors to wear masks on campus at all times.

Even if you are not a nursing student, not wearing a mask still affects you as a student at Montana State University.

This will not only lower the risk of infection within the MSU community but also within the  Gallatin County. There is no need to endanger ourselves, our fellow colleagues, our patients or our mentors. Make masks mandatory.
