Locals of this specific neighborhood frequently bring their dogs to Sandan Park as there are no off leash dog areas anywhere else in walking distance to this area.

Many of us dog owners live in condos, apartments, and shared homes in the immediate vicinity and do not have property with a private yard and therefore have no opportunity for our dogs to play freely and exercise in a safe, secured off-leash setting.

The use of Sandan Park for off leash dogs has recently flagged attention with the city spending tax dollars on City pickups to spend their time at work driving around and attempting to incur a $100 ticket on locals who are monitoring their dogs. Also by spending money on a recent newsletter sent to the homeowners in the area about dogs exercising at Sandan Park under the supervision of their owners.

This has been causing uproar due to the amount of City pickups that have wasted tax dollars on fuel, salaries, time and funds that could be going into the safety of securing a legal dog park in the area. As well as the amount of time creating the said newsletter, ink, and delivery/postage. Many children in the neighborhood play at this park with little to zero adult supervision, while dogs that are being monitored by their owners are not allowed nor welcome off leash.

It is nearly impossible to exercise our dogs while they are leashed. The importance of exercising our dogs is to ensure a safe community to prevent issues/reports with bad behaved dogs. It is at high importance to give dogs and adequate amount of exercise and socialization per day to ensure a well-behaved dog. Ergo, less dogs who could have destructive behavior, aggressive rough play, excess barking, and most importantly, unfriendly habits.

In order to improve our neighborhood, it is only reasonable to consider utilizing Sandan Park as an off-leash park for dogs. We believe that this accommodation will be a win/win situation for ALL park users, not just the dog owners. If the dog owners do not abide by common sense rules, they shall be reported to the appropriate authorities.

There are several more condo buildings and housing going up in the area with potential growth in the amount of dog owners in the community.

We ask the City of Bozeman, Parks and Recreation, and residents of our neighborhood, to consider an acceptance of off leash dogs at Sandan Park.
