Dear Sterling Residents,
Please call upon your City Commissioners to change the below City Ordinance so citizens may have the liberty to choose which dog breeds may join Sterling families. As it stands, Rottweilers and Pitbulls are prohibited from residing in Sterling - LET'S CHANGE THAT!

Existing Sterling City Code Chapter II, Articles 1 & 2 already include language regarding potentially dangerous and dangerous dogs, penalties and consequences for harboring said dogs, and all other regulations pertaining to dogs.

Existing ordinances are sufficient and do not need to include BSL language. ALL dog breeds have the potential to be dangerous – the need to single out two breeds is unsupported by scholarly evidence and an unsubstantiated claim that gives communities a false sense of safety.

PLEASE STRIKE THE BELOW LANGUAGE FROM THE CITY CODE

Prohibited Animals Ordinance Number 2335. Section 1 (b): "Dogs: Keeping Prohibited. It shall be unlawful to keep, harbor, own in any way possess within the corporate limits of the City of Sterling, Kansas, any "Rottweiler" dog or "Pit Bull" dog. For purposes of this section, "Rottweiler" shall mean any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of the Rottweiler breed of dog. "Pit Bull" dog is defined to mean the following:

1. The Staffordshire bull terrier breed of dog;
2. The American pit bull terrier breed of dog;
3. The American Staffordshire terrier breed of dog;
4. Any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of the breeds of Staffordshire bull terrier, American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, or a combination of any of these breeds."
