Dear Minister,

We, as concerned parents and carers of Le Fevre Peninsula Primary School, Le Fevre Peninsula Kindergarten and local community of the Le Fevre Peninsula respectfully request that all demolition planned for Shed 26 Semaphore Road, Birkenhead is refrained until outside of school term.

Note: Based on information from Cedar Woods and The Old Red Brick Co the following hazardous building materials found in Shed 26 include asbestos; PolyChlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Synthetic Mineral Fibres (SMFs) They are highly hazardous to the health of people. In example, the inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause respiratory diseases including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Latency periods of up to 40 years are not uncommon for these diseases

We believe that demolition conducted during the school term poses a grave unacceptable health risk to over 400+ school students (and teachers) and disruption to their education. Not to mention the Kindergarten adjacent whom are encouraged to have nature play which were not advised of the demolition.

We are not prepared to accept any level of risk, small or large to the current and future health of our precious children. We believe that given the lack of transparency and consideration around the large asbestos removal, the size, age and structure of Shed 26, that there are no circumstances that will permit demolition to be safely undertaken with our children located inside buildings and playgrounds in such close proximity less than 500m.

A report by Clarence Fellows of the Construction, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) on the 7th May 2019 Outlined some startling finds which only highlight our concerns.

In regards to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Workers Health and Safety (WHS), and proper Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) in conclusion he stated ‘ This site presents uncontrolled hazards and complete lack of competent management, placing all entrants at risk. ‘

And goes on to say ‘ There was little to no safety presence on the job, from observing the workers on site little to no supervision or guidance was being given as to how the job was going to be performed. The attitude of ‘we just get in do it’ was evident.

In our beliefs, a company that has been accredited to be asbestos removers can not follow basic fundamental work site protocol, they clearly can not be trusted in the safe removal of highly hazardous asbestos material with our children in care across the road.

This petition demands any further demolition ONLY to be done outside school term and using best industry practice inline with

Work Health and Safety Act 2012, section 274 (Approved Codes of Practice

We can not prevent asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer from exposure to asbestos in the past. We WILL protect our precious children for the future.

To all our signatories we encourage you all to contact our local MP Susan Close via call, email or person if you would like to let her know why you signed our petition.
