Problem
Homelessness has been a major issue for as long as we can remember. It is a social problem with large economic and social factors such as lack of affordable housing. Gentrification has had a great impact on homelessness and lack of affordable housing is a leading cause of homelessness. People are kicked out of their homes or move out of gentrified areas because of higher rents. The rich move into low-income neighborhoods and raise the rent. After paying rent and utilities, 75% of the people are left with less than half of their income to pay for food, healthcare, transportation etc. This leads to devastating and unfortunate situations for people of all backgrounds.
Solution
In order to solve the issue of gentrification, we want to be able to make a change by passing the 18 bills package (1242, 1247, 1274, 1275, 1277 etc.) The 18 bills package are a series of bills that when passed, can prevent landlords from harassing tenants, falsifying permits and displacing tenants causing them to move out of their houses/apartments. Landlords are restricted from doing anything to the tenants which involves forcing them to move out. They are not allowed to bribe/pay them or sue them in any such way. If the 18 bills package is approved, the rate of homelessness due to gentrification will decrease, and can live normal and comfortable lives.
