The thermal printed receipt paper used at most stores is coated with the harmful chemical Bisphenol A, or more commonly referred to as BPA. This chemical can leach into the skin on contact and can elevate levels of BPA in the body. BPA mimics estrogen and other hormones, leading to numerous health issues such as fertility issues, heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Not only can BPA have negative health effects on the human body, it also negatively impacts the environment by increasing chemical pollution. Banning the use of BPA coated receipts from stores in York would limit the communities exposure to it and would lessen the impact that it has on the environment.
