PROBLEM

The council are currently paying approx £35,000.00, of tax payers money, per month while they confirm future plans for the vacant building on Battle Close, SW19.

Merton Council have opted to use the land for a new housing development. A project that will take approximately 2-3 years before planning is granted. This means the council will be spending £400k annually just to keep this building closed.

SOLUTION

Merton Council have received a legitimate offer from a health club provider to take over the site on a temporary basis before the plans for housing start.

Unfortunately, the council have declined the offer and decided to continuing paying until development starts.

The total cost to the tax payer is likely to be upwards of £1000,000.00

COMMUNITY

The proposal offered to the council also contains details of many benefits to the local community -

- Providing a gym for less than £25.00 per month

- Community events to held regularly

- Up to 25 new jobs created

- Proposed support to The AFC Foundation (Charity)
