Increase safety at Main St & South St intersection in Medford, MA

South St and Main St in Medford is a high volume traffic area which has been left with poor signaling and a difficult traffic pattern. South St is one-way with three lanes approaching Main St at a right angle. At this location, Main St has two lanes operating in each direction. South St traffic can turn left, continue straight, or turn right. South St traffic is presented with stop signs and a red blinking light, while Main St northbound is presented with a yellow blinking light and Main St southbound is presented with a non-functional traffic light.
The latest modifications to the intersection have been due to the nearby Craddock Bridge construction, which has been going on for over a year at this point and is not expected to be completed until November 2018 at the earliest. The intersection is the source of a lot of sloppy driving and encourages drivers to cut-off cross traffic. The current set up is very unsafe and does not provide pedestrians or bikers any form of visibility or priority.
The intersection must be addressed as soon as possible, whether this be in the hands of the city directly, the construction crews, or of DCR who manages the Mystic Valley Parkway overpass right next to it. Medford as a community deserves a safer major thoroughfare and we demand that this be addressed with the addition of a full car/bike traffic light cycle and pedestrian walk cycle, whether it be a temporary installation during the Craddock Bridge construction work period or permanently.
