The current expungement laws are that if you have an offense, no matter how old it is, that is excluded from being eligible for an expungement, that you have to wait until you are 70, or 3 years after being dead in order to apply for an expungement.  An expungement removes a criminal record from your record and is made as if it has never happened.  It will restore your rights such as to serve on Jury Duty, hold a public office (like a local Mayor or commissioner), the right to possess a firearm. This will also help your record to not come up in any work, home, or any background check.  It makes it as if the crime never happened.  For mos M1, and F3 offenses, you are not eligible for the states new Clean Slate law and your only recourse other than being 70 or dead 3 years, is to apply through the very lengthy (3-4 years) pardon process.  Your chances of obtaining a pardon are very slim.  In fact, the Gov. has not granted a pardon in almost 2 years.  I would like to see fair treatment for all of those that are affected.  I would like to change the laws to where if you were under 25 at the time of the conviction, and have had no other convictions for atleast 10-15 years, you can apply for an expungement.  Or for an M1, 10-15 years without any new convictions, and for F3 20-25 years.  Most people would fall under the 25 category.  This is a stage in a young persons life where they are moving out of their parents homes, going away to college.  Their whole life is turned upside down, it is all new and all exciting, but yet sometimes frightening.  They meet new friends, try new experiences, and make bad choices.  Sometimes those choices comes with life long shame and consequences even long after they serve their sentence.  With all of the reform going on and helping those with lesser (marijuana possession or being drunk in public) crimes, we need to level the playing field and help those out that have had brushes with the law, and have learned their lessons from their mistakes, and have proven to be a valued member of society once again.
