Knife crime is becoming a vocal point in many House of Commons discussion as of late and predominantly described as a ‘crisis’. While the lack of police presence on the streets of Britain often heard as the reason behind this, social and environmental factors are merely pushed aside and not discussed in tackling such a topic that has taken so many people’s lives. A death caused by the use of a knife does not just happen on the streets on Britain, it is happening in homes through domestic violence and also people familiar to the victims. In July 2018 my 26 year old cousin was killed by his ‘friend’ during an alleged drunken argument within the assailants dwelling, my cousin died from a single stab wound to the heart from an 18 inch knife. The assailant was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years and 10 months imprisonment, the severity of the crime and the impact it has had on my family does not reflect the sentence given. There needs to be a change from the government and the criminal justice system in acting as a deterrent against crimes of this nature, the government call it a ‘crisis’ when this has been an ongoing problem for a lengthy period of time.
