Stay the Course: Preserve Queens Bay, Choose Balfour Ferry Landing

We Need A New Ferry, Not A New Ferry Landing! Our rural lifestyle is under attack. Kootenay Lake does not need a new industrial ferry landing in pristine Queen's Bay.  We need to upgrade our current ferry landing, build a new ferry, and keep our rural community vibrant. The value of the Balfour and Queens Bay communities are at risk. --------- On June 15th the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) presented a feasibility study advocating the construction of a new ferry terminal on Kootenay Lake, in Queens Bay, to replace the existing Ferry Landing in Balfour.  Originally we were given three weeks to respond. The communities of Balfour and Queens Bay were blind-sided. Yet, in a couple weeks we managed to collect about 3000 signatures opposing the move. We're pleased MOTI has extended the consultation deadline to October 6th. MOTI heard us. However, the decision to move the ferry landing has not been made. Now, more than ever, public pressure is important! --------- The 176 page initiative to move the Balfour Ferry Landing to Queens Bay is ill-conceived, and fails to consider the economic, social, cultural, environmental issues at stake.  MOTI has shamelessly promoted a single interest in a feasibility study with outdated data, massive omissions, countless assumptions, questionable forecasts and problematic budgets, according to Bill Griffiths, PhD, Transportation Consultant. The bias in the feasibility study, consultation process and public questionnaire, slaps in the face the intention of MOTI to appear genuinely interested in the public’s opinion. --------- The Kootenay Lake ferry is of significant benefit to the Central Kootenay. Decisions around its operation have high consequences for the communities on the lake and the lake itself.  It is our position that the feasibility study for the ferry landing relocation and the existing public consultation exercise are neither fair, nor adequate, given the negative economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts. For more information on why the ferry landing should stay in Balfour, please go to our Facebook page - Choose Balfour or website  www.ChooseBalfour.com --------- We ask that the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure build a new ferry for the Balfour Landing, and preserve the pristine, environmentally-sensitive Queens Bay. Stay the Course:  Preserve Queens Bay, Choose Balfour Ferry Landing and a new Kootenay Lake Ferry.
