UTGSU Executive Committee's Statement and Petition Against White Supremacy
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500.
On August 14, a Facebook event created by the Canadian Nationalist Party (CNP) promoting a “Toronto Nationalist Rally” on September 14 at The University of Toronto King’s College Circle was discovered. As of August 17, the CNP has cancelled the September 14 rally, but have stated that there might be plans to host this rally in the future.
The CNP has a clear platform that undermines the equity and advocacy efforts of the UTGSU and our Members. As part of the CNP's original platform statements, they ask for: the support to create a national citizen militia, to eliminate a minimum and fair wage, to abolish democratic institutions, and to cancel support for Indigenous people. While The University of Toronto has reported the event to Facebook, asking them to remove it and has publicly stated that no “official booking” for the space was made, the administration of The University of Toronto has not stated that they are working to put measures in place to prevent any collective organizing of this nature happening from this group on our campus in the future.
The UTGSU Executive Committee does not condone or tolerate white supremacy. Considering the violence that took three lives and injured countless others in Charlottesville, Virginia over this past weekend, The University of Toronto should not be taking a passive stance that gives an opportunity for white supremacy to live and grow on our campus.
We are asking all graduate students, members of The University of Toronto's community and concerned members of the public, to sign our petition, asking The University of Toronto to develop and implement proactive measures that protect its Members and prevents the campuses of The University of Toronto to act as sites of bigotry.
