We are writing to express our support for New York State Senate Bill S2584A. We believe that the passage of this bill has profound implications for the health and safety of children and youth in our community and across New York State, and that its passage in this legislative session is critical to their development.

It is high time we establish curriculum standards in New York State that support the implementation of a comprehensive, inclusive and medically-accurate sexuality education. Studies show that a sequential, age-appropriate K-12 program of sex education can prevent child sex abuse, reduce intimate partner violence, create a more positive school climate, reduce bullying and harassment of LGBTQIA+ students, and lower rates of suicidal ideation among LGBTQIA+ students.

Yet, in the absence of clear guidelines, too often our students receive an education that is inaccurate, incomplete and inadequate. While all of our children suffer when they are misinformed about the basic facts of sexual development, students who identify as LGBTQIA+ are further isolated when the curriculum fails to address their existence entirely. The consequences of their erasure cannot be overstated; across New York state, students who identify as LGBTQIA+ experience higher rates of bullying, substance abuse, depression and anxiety than students who identify as straight and/or cisgender.

The pandemic has rightly focused our attention on the mental health and well-being of young people and as we seek to mitigate their struggles, it is vital that we consider all of their needs. Arming them with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their bodies, the skills to navigate healthy relationships and the tools to combat bullying and biases around gender and identity are absolutely critical to their well-being, and to their future academic success. We must create spaces in our schools where students can feel safe, supported, and seen.

We strongly believe that Senate Bill S2584A is an excellent step toward that goal, and urge you to consider its passage in the current legislative term.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
