Callie Vandewiele started this petition to Senator Alan Olsen

We are part of the majority of Oregonians who believe that if elected officials don’t like a bill, they should show up and work to improve the bill or simply vote against it. There is too much at stake for them to refuse to go to work.  Our legislators are not being paid taxpayers money to take out of state vacations! When lawmakers refuse to negotiate, compromise, and come to a consensus - no matter the issue - it runs counter to getting things done for Oregonians. We call on Senator Olsen to think hard about how walking out of the Legislature affects Oregonians--especially the people he ostensibly is paid to represent.

Sen. Olsen represents a diverse district, with people who live both in rural and urban spaces. He represents farmers, teachers, public servants, small business owners and more. While it is clear where Sen. Olsen stands privately on issues such as Climate Change, his job is not to represent his personal views. The senator’s  job is to represent his constituency, and we (members of his constituency) believe that Sen. Olsen can best represent our views by going to work and doing the job he was elected to do: represent the people of Senate District 20 in Salem. Not by staying home.

In this divisive era we believe that it is incredibly important for elected officials to continue to do their jobs, regardless of whether or not they believe their party will 'win.' Democracy isn't about stonewalling, and it isn't about taking your ball and running home to hide. Democracy is not about getting your way no matter what other people want. It is about cooperation and about negotiation, and sometimes it is about continuing to go to work and to vote even if you are in the minority and the outcome may not be what you prefer.

We also believe that the people of our district would be best represented not by a legislature held captive by people who refuse to go to work, but by legislators willing to go to work, to put in the effort and to abide by democratic outcomes. Our democracy only works if and when the values of representation and democracy are upheld. Refusing to govern because you don't like the bills on the table is not being part of a democracy representing the will of the people; it is hijacking the legislative process.

That is why we're calling on State Senator Alan Olsen to do stay and do the job he was elected (and is paid) to do: represent the people of Senate District 20 by GOING TO WORK.

Please sign our petition to tell Alan Olsen that as long as he is accepting tax payer dollars as a salary he needs EARN that money by GOING TO WORK and DOING HIS JOB.
