Revise the Massachusetts Autism Commission to create uniform standards for Autism Agencies and Providers in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts has no clear or consistent oversight or standards for ABA providers, including background checks. If a family is wronged or harmed by a ABA provider, there is also no clear path for assistance. One ABA provider can have different standards and training for staff than another ABA provider. Plumbers and Estheticians have more oversight in Massachusetts than ABA providers, so your toilet and skin is better protected than your autistic child. It is important for Massachusetts families seeking and needing at-home autism services to have a consistent level of training, oversight, certification or licensure of staff providing autism services to their families.
The Massachusetts Legislature should reactivate the Autism Commission and charge them to review the oversight, certification and licensure of ABA and ABA-related agencies/providers and issue a report with action items the legislature can implement into rules, regulations and/or laws to provide consistent ABA services, and common standards for ABA providers and agencies, for families in Massachusetts.
With this area of health care growing at a rapid fire rate, it is no longer acceptable to rely on general national guidelines. It is time for real action, and real regulations.
