Protect public safety by mandating annual testing for drivers over 80 years old.

Florida has the highest senior citizen population (as a %) in the United States.(1)  According to data from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the frequency of accidents for older drivers begins to increase slightly at 65 years old.  However, it is at age 80 that elderly drivers involvement in vehicle crashes rises sharply.(2)

Currently, there are 33 states with laws regarding older drivers.  Of those 33, Florida's current rules are the most lax, requiring a driver over 80 years old to be re-tested every 6 years.(3) There is a clear threat to public safety. Too frequently, Floridians are faced with the loss of loved ones or friends who were injured, or in many cases killed, by the actions of a driver with declining or impaired motor functions.

Obviously, older Floridians deserve independence and a full life.  However, when the operation of a motor vehicle becomes a threat to public safety, the Florida legislature must step in and create rules for the protection of all Florida residents and visitors.
