Public Act 90 of 1978, the Youth Employment Standards Act (YESA), prohibits minors defined as someone who is less than 18 years of age, including but not limited to employees, volunteers, independent contractors and performing artists that are 16-17 from working more than 24 hours in one workweek (6 days). Reference 409.111 Sec. 11 subdivison (e) https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/mcl/pdf/mcl-Act-90-of-1978.pdf

What I would like to change would be the amount of hours a 16-17 year old can legally work in one workweek. In Michigan, the legal amount of hours before becoming a full time employee is 30 hours. I believe that 16-17 year old's should be able to work up to that 29 hour limit before hitting the 30 hour mark.

The average high school day length in Michigan is 6.56 hours or 6 hours and 33 minutes. 6 hours and 33 minutes (6.56 hours) multiplied by 5 days is 32.8 hours or 32 hours and 48 minutes. So in one five day school week, minors are in school for 32 hours and 48 minutes technically considering it a full time job.

I believe this change will benefit businesses and 16-17 year old's all around Michigan. The benefits for these changes could be economically and socially.
Economically, this would increase spending in local communities. Socially, More time with peers in a safe and supervised environment. Minors who do not have any interest in sports or school sponsored activities still have a position place to interact.
