In Massachusetts a transgender person can change their legal name and have their ID's gender changed with a letter from a doctor or therapist or qualifying professional. However Massachusetts requires transgender people to go through Sexual Reassignment Surgery in order to change even the name on their birth certificates. Having a birth cirtificate with a different name and gender can put trans people at risk and can put them into some difficult situations. Some transgender people don't need or want surgery and others cannot afford it. Surgery should not be a requirement to have accurate identification documents. I believe that a state which is supposed to be a leader in LGBT rights should not continue such policies. Please join me in letting the Massachusetts General Court know you don't think the state should be telling people they must have surgery to live how they feel. Update: The American Medical Association calls for updates to this policy as well as the world health organization.
