Traffic Free Del Mar

During the summer, San Diego is a great place to be. We have beaches, the San Diego County Fair, and the Horse Races, but with these fun experiences comes a lot of traffic. With the county fair bringing in over 1.6 million people every summer, the I- 5 freeway becomes a parking lot. This freeway is one of the most traveled in the nation and connects the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and San Diego. People are forced to find ways to avoid the dreaded highway, making their commutes much longer.
The best way to solve this problem is to create a seasonal train station in which trains would stop at the Del Mar Fairgrounds during the four largest fair events (San Diego County Fair, Summer Horseraces, Fall Horseraces, and Kaaboo Music Festival). This addition would not only decrease traffic, but would also increase safety because many people walk or ride their bikes on the busy streets leading to the fairgrounds.
The addition of this seasonal train station would also benefit the environment as there will be less cars and therefore less carbon pollution in the air. In addition, there would be less constant noise coming from the freeways versus trains, which would only create brief noise when this form of mass transit is in the area. By signing this petition, you are helping to make the idea of less traffic on the I-5 during big Del Mar fairground events a reality.
