This is a petition to rename the JBER Bryant Field Alaska Army National Guard Maintenance Hangar 6 to be the SFC Herbert Alex Alaska Army National Guard Maintenance Hangar.  SFC Herbert Alex, a Dena'ina Athabascan, was the grandson of the last Traditional Chief of the Native Village of Eklutna, Eklutna Alex.  His and two other lives were lost on February 19, 1971 while on a flight from Whitehorse, YT, to Fort Richardson, AK, due to navigational error.

Many current National Guard members are unaware of these events in Alaska aviation history. The Alaska Army National Guard was the first in the nation to begin an aviation component. The plane was coming from the US Army. It had been stationed in Panama and re-fitted and overhauled in California.

SFC Herbert Alex served in the US Army 7th Armored Division from 1951 to 1953,  in the US Army Reserves for 5 years, and also served in and employed by the Alaska Army National Guard as an aircraft mechanic until his death.

Memorializing SFC Alex through renaming the maintenance hangar on the 50th Anniversary of the accident, will help bring wider awareness to a local Dena'ina village hero lost and to what the Alaska Army National Guard is now.
