Claude Raiola started this petition to State Government and

We need to reduce the occurrence of road related deaths / injury due to drunken, hooning, dangerous at risk driving of drivers on our roads.

At the moment of an at risk driving event if there are other passengers travelling in the car at the time, it’s only those passengers who have any opportunity to discourage the at risk driving behaviour of the driver. Such encouragement will drastically reduce the risk of their being an accident potentially resulting major injury if not death.

If those passengers make no effort to discourage the at risk driving behaviour of the driver, or even worse encourage the drivers to continue with the at risk driving behaviour, those passengers should be liable to incur the same driving offences / penalties that the driver will incur when apprehended by the police.

Reducing speed limits or in the case of drunken driving reducing the max blood alcohol levels allowed will do very little to deter  at risk driving behaviour across the board.

Putting the responsibility on other passengers who are there in the moment with the deterrent of potentially also incurring the same penalties as the offending driver is in my view the most effective way to combat such at risk driving behaviour.

In essence the passengers will be self policing the occurrence of any at risk driving behaviour of the driver as the passengers do not want to run the risk of incurring the same penalties as the at risk driver.
