Why this petition matters

Started by Owen Briffa

This group has been formed to save the St Marks Church in Mt Helena on the cnr of Keane St and Ealy St. This church has been left abandoned since 2012 and now we need to save the church so it can benefit the community again, as it holds many memories for people who have married, had christenings and attended church services.

History about the Church...

The church has been at this site since 1930. Before that it was in a more flood prone area in Chidlow street, near where Mt Helena Oval is located. The building was consecrated on 26 th April 1907, by the then Bishop of Perth, the Right Revered Charles Riley. The porch area was added in 1915, the same year that the first resident priest, Revd. Rowland Taylor was appointed. Extensive repairs and modifications were made to the church in the mid to late 1980s.

On Sunday the 22nd January 2012 over 50 people gathered at St. Mark’s to witness its deconsecration by The Right Reverend Tom Wilmot, Assistant Bishop of Perth. This was the end of an era for this little church which had served the community for over one hundred years.

Thank you for you support!
