Malcolm Gardiner started this petition to State Government of Victoria and

A Subterranean National Park will protect significant aquifers in the Otway Ranges and prevent over extraction that has caused devastating impacts. Farmland, wetland, springs and streams will have a chance to recover.

Past Impacts include:

  • 30 km fish kills in the Barwon River.
  • Wetland decimation.
  • Farmland turned to wasteland.
  • Springs, creeks and rivers drying up.
  • Creation of toxic acid water and heavy metals.
  • Pollution and contamination of groundwater.
  • Wildfire risk elevated.
  • Drying peats turning from carbon sinks to areas releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Allow the aquifers to recover and return to the natural overflow of water into wetlands, springs and streams.

  • In 2019 the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning concluded that it will take at least 309 years for the aquifers to fully recover.
  • Past groundwater extractions have been a mining operation. Sustainable extraction falls between 200 & 400 ML/year, not 20,000 ML/year like the licence that has just expired.
  • The impact area has spread to over 480 square kilometres and can be reversed.
