Why this petition matters

Started by Jay Phillips

While we all have some free time to be introspective and reflective there is one thing that is certain we must take this opportunity to reset and review some of these antiquated and outdated “Dram” laws. The fact that the penalty for an underage person drinking is significantly more harsh on the establishment and specifically an employee is unfair. Many restaurant employees live paycheck to paycheck and there should be no shame or stigma in this. However due to the nature of this type of situation to put such a burden on them is grossly unfair. It’s not to say there is no accountability they shouldn’t be aware or vigilant but we are demanding a penalty in line with the offending party.
Furthermore we are hereinafter demanding dram laws regarding over serving as it relates to an accident resulting in fatality or accident be reviewed. No professional goes to work wanting to be involved in a situation that would directly or indirectly result in an innocent third party being hurt or worse. However there is no possible way to discriminate a persons tolerance level or where the over serving came as many individuals indulge at various locations or take controlled substances to enhance what would typically not resulted in intoxication. This would be akin to prosecuting McDonalds for an individual who develops diabetes from constant indulgence. It’s unfair and unacceptable. It leaves way too much discretion to a government official.
