In history, we often undermine BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other people of color) with little to no recognition of their huge accomplishments and strengths. We teach of slavery and racism, but don't mention the full stories of those figures who chose to stand in their power and fight against the racial injustice, still present today. Slaves were not just slaves, they were people who continued to fight for their life, with confidence, at a time when they were seen as nothing but property by a white washed society. We have the ability to teach children that they are more valuable than what their labels suggest. So children, of all backgrounds, can know that they have the ability to take on the world fearlessly. As a member of the Latinx community, I know what it feels like to be clueless of who you are and what you truly represent because of how much history is not told. We have the power to create a brighter future for our loved ones, and it starts with what we teach young children and teens in school. Let's introduce the value of acceptance by showing students that it is okay to feel proud in your skin.

Will you demand to teach the truth of the hardships and successes your ancestors have overcome? Or will you remain silent?

Lawmakers in 27 states are attempting to pass legislation that will completely erase the history of sexism, racism, hetero-sexism and oppression throughout the U.S. We can't allow the stories and words of our ancestors to be lost in the shadows of white supremacists. I ask you to join the community in expanding the educational system, more specifically the history curriculum being taught to ALL grades. Enough of 'American' wars, let's present the diverse and historical TRUTH of our country. We deserve to hear those voices we can learn from and follow the footsteps of those worthy of celebration. Let's change history today for a brighter tomorrow!
