Why this petition matters

Started by Michael Cleary

All too often, in the heated environment of apprehending and arresting suspects of non-violent crimes, police officers will use extreme and often deadly force. All too often, this results in serious injury or death to the suspect and also innocent bystanders.

By abolishing the use of such force for non-violent offenses and subsequently re-training of police officers, not only will lives be saved, but police officer careers will be saved as well.  If kneeling on necks, choke holds, body slams and other such extreme methods are removed from the police officers' options under such circumstances, the incidents of serious injury or death of suspects and bystanders will be greatly reduced if not outright eliminated.

Such changes in police procedures could be achieved on the local level, by individual police departments and municipal governments, on the state level by state executive and/or legislative bodies, and on the federal level, by federal executive or legislative bodies (US Congress).

No matter the method of the change -local, state, or federal -this change MUST be made as a matter of basic human rights and to salvage an already crumbling justice system.
