Stand With Standing Rock, STOP using Wells Fargo for Starbucks Company Banking

Attn: Howard Schultz, Starbucks Partners, and all Starbucks Shareholders

Wells Fargo is one of the main banks invested in the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). This pipeline violates the rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, who live less than one mile away from the proposed oil route. Building this pipeline threatens the sacred sites, drinking water, and environment of the Standing Rock Sioux and surrounding areas. Wells Fargo's funding has allowed Energy Transfer Partners and their security forces to use rubberized bullets, tear gas, and water cannons in sub-zero temperatures against peaceful native and non-native people in prayerful protest.
While ETP claims that their pipelines are safe, they and their subsidiaries have been an active part of the 3,300 pipeline breaks in the US since 2010. Sunoco alone is responsible for at least 200 oil spills in that time frame, including a pipeline break in Pennsylvania this October that leaked 55,000 gallons of oil into the Susquehanna River. It is well past time for a change to our energy system, and we hope that Starbucks will be a leader in this movement. Since our government is not actively helping its own people and allies, we call upon you and other conscience corporations to take action on behalf of the people who shop in your stores.
Please take a stand and let everyone know that it is important to you, as partners and shareholders, that we honor the treaties our government made and STOP taking land from First Nation, Native Peoples.
If Wells Fargo is affected by enough individuals and corporations removing their funds, they will likely retract their funding and stop supporting the Dakota Access Pipeline. Starbucks's actions alone could help Wells Fargo make the critical decision to do the right thing. The largest bank in Norway, DNB, has already pulled out hundreds of millions of dollars in loans and credit lines, so we know that this is possible.
At a time when millions of us are deciding where to spend our holiday dollars, we hope that Starbucks will truly live up to the “third place” experience, supporting marginalized peoples instead of contributing to their further oppression; where all can feel at home, because our values are reflected in company policy and procedure.
Mr. Schultz, we ask that you and Starbucks be on the right side of history by helping this movement for human rights, native rights, environmental health, the future of America and clean fresh water for all.

Please act today.

THANK YOU.
