According to the Physicians Committee, 75% of the world population - including 25% of the U.S. population - loses their lactase enzymes after weaning ends. This results in extremely uncomfortable gastrointestinal discomfort in the form of gas, bloating, cramping, and diarrhea - all symptoms people who are lactose intolerant have to deal with, should they drink milk.
Not only is lactose intolerance an issue, but so are dairy allergies. When someone is allergic to dairy, the mere consumption of it could kill them, depending on the severity.
This brings me to Starbucks. Starbucks currently charges between $0.60 to $0.80 for a person to substitute the dairy milk (present in almost all of their drinks) for a non-dairy alternative. Not only this, but they notoriously forget or mess up customers non-dairy orders, resulting in unexpected discomfort later in the day.
It's not right for Starbucks to be charging people with a medical inability to have dairy milk. After contacting Starbucks, their excuse was that non-dairy milk is more expensive, when it is in fact not, even for the average consumer. A half gallon of dairy milk is the same price as a half gallon at Trader Joe's, for example. Even if there were a difference, there is no way it could be extreme enough to merit charging each customer almost an entire whole dollar more, on top of the price of an already overpriced drink.
This does sound like a very, very first world problem - and it is. But, it's something that many people suffer with and it is morally wrong that Starbucks takes advantage of an enzyme deficiency or an allergy, and makes a profit off of it. Please sign this petition so that I can get it to Starbucks and make non-dairy options more accessible to those who cannot digest them.
