Businesses: Value over Profit

It cannot be denied that there is still a notion towards business being all about profit, business people being unethical, and business in general revolves around guile and greed.

In one article by a consultant of HubSpot, one statement from an anonymous company executive was indicated: “Profit is like health. You need it, and the more the better. But it’s not why you exist.”

Generally, businesses were made by entrepreneurs so that each day can be filled with new opportunities to be creative and learn something new. "The great thing about owning a small business is I rarely experience the same day twice," says Michael Wilson, co-founder of Mad Dancer Media, a web design and brand management firm in Franklin, Tennessee. "Because every day, I learn something new about the act of owning a business. Whether it’s something about taxes, about accounting, or the plethora of other things that go into running a company, I am always fascinated by the parts and pieces of knowledge that I learn every day just to keep the business on track." This implies that businesses are not just about gaining profit but about challenging oneself to make decisions for a better future.

Several businesses were also created out of passion and the desire to help other people. For instance, the Starbucks Company has been named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies for 10 years in a row. With the underlying purpose of contributing to various communities from every coffee drink that they serve, they are able to connect with their customers and provide special benefits and perks to their partners. “While Our Mission and Values provide the guardrails by which we act, it is up to each of us to do our part to maintain a great work environment and to lead with ethics and integrity,” said Matthew Swaya, Starbucks senior vice president, deputy general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer.

By signing this petition, you can help eradicate the misconception that businesses were made only for the purpose of gaining profit. You are also encouraged to share this appeal to spread awareness on the fact that business were created to provide authentic service, develop human condition, satisfy the needs of the community and create meaning to other people’s lives.
