It is estimated that there are more than 15 trillion tons of plastic bits in our oceans. Disposable plastic forks, spoons, straws are polluting the ocean at a shocking rate. Ocean currents are sweeping billions of tiny plastic bits to the Arctic. One estimate is that Starbucks uses 2 billion plastic straws per year. True, switching to compostable straws won't solve every evironmental hazard of plastics in a restaurant business, but it will make a difference. It's the right start for a forward-thinking, green-leaning company such as Starbucks. Be an environmental steward: Use compostable straws in all your stores, not just in the very few cities where it's mandated by local laws.
